Hail damage roof inspection in Thornton

Find out whether your Thornton roof has real hail damage before you call your insurance company. The inspection is free, you get the photos, and we tell you plainly whether a claim makes sense. We are about 10 miles away in Wheat Ridge.

What we check on Thornton roofs

Thornton's roofs split into two groups. South of 120th Avenue, the original 1950s and 1960s ranches have simple gable roofs where hail shows clearly, and we check the decking on the oldest homes. North of 120th, most homes were built from the 1990s on with builder-grade shingles, and those are the roofs we most often find cracked and stripped of granules after repeated storms. North Thornton's open fields also bring wind, so we look for creased and lifted shingles along with hail bruising.

Recent hail near Thornton

The National Weather Service reported significant damage in Thornton from the May 30, 2024 hailstorm, which crossed the northern metro with hail up to 2 inches or more; regional damage was estimated near $2 billion. Storm reports show about 272 hail reports within 10 miles of Thornton since 2004.

Hail counts and dates are from National Weather Service and Storm Prediction Center reports compiled by StormerSite. Check your own address for hail.

How a free hail inspection works

  1. Ground check. We start with the soft metals: gutters, downspouts, vents, window wraps and the AC unit. Dents there show how big the hail was and which direction it came from.
  2. On the roof. We walk every slope we can safely walk and mark test areas, counting hits on the shingles and checking for cracked mats, missing granules and broken seals. We also check the flashing, pipe jacks and ridge.
  3. Attic, if needed. On older homes or when there's a leak, we check the decking and look for water stains from below.
  4. Photo report. You get the photos and a plain-language summary: no damage, minor repair, or damage that's likely worth a claim.
  5. You decide. Filing a claim is up to you. If you file and hire us, we meet your adjuster on the roof and show the damage. You stay in charge of your claim.

Hail damage or normal wear?

Hail leaves round, random hits: dark spots where granules were knocked off, soft bruises you can feel, and cracks in the shingle mat. Normal aging looks different: even granule loss across the whole roof, curling edges, and cracking along the sun-facing slopes. Insurance generally covers storm damage, not wear, so telling the two apart is the main point of the inspection. Read more in our after-the-storm checklist.

Thornton hail inspection questions

My Thornton roof was replaced after an earlier storm. Can it be damaged again?

Yes. A new roof can be damaged by the next storm. If yours is impact-rated (Class 4), we also check that it's documented, since some insurers give a discount for it.

Do you check for wind damage too?

Yes. In north Thornton especially, we check every slope for creased, lifted or missing shingles, which are usually covered like hail.
